ReWork — Jason Fried & David Heinemeier Hansson

A Manifesto Disguised as a Business Book

Picture a polar explorer trudging alone toward the North Pole, dragging a sled across cracking ice in temperatures that freeze his eyelashes shut. His name is Ben Saunders. He is going to run the equivalent of thirty-one back-to-back marathons across the top of the world, for seventy-two days, without another human being in sight. If he stops to think about the whole journey, his head will explode. So he does not think about the whole journey. He thinks about the next few yards of ice in front of his boots. That is how he gets to the Pole.

ReWork is a business book written for people who feel buried under the whole journey. It is short on purpose. The chapters are tiny. The arguments are flat assertions, like punches landing one after another. Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson, the founders of the software company that built Basecamp and gave the world Ruby on Rails, decided to write a manifesto rather than a manual. They are tired of the heroic founder myth, the fifty-page business plan, the all-hands meeting, the venture-backed scaling fantasy, and the gospel that you have to wreck your life to build something worth keeping. They wrote a book against all of it.

What they put in its place is not a methodology so much as a posture. Do less. Ship sooner than feels safe. Talk like a human being. Hire people who already act like adults. Sell what you actually believe in. Stop apologizing for being small. The book reads like a friend who has watched you stare at a blank Gantt chart for six months and finally grabs you by the shoulders and tells you to open your laptop and make something today. By the end you do not have a roadmap. You have a permission slip.
