It was a Saturday evening, maybe twenty years after graduation, and six old friends were seated around a long table in a restaurant that had not changed since the neighborhood was young. The menus were laminated. The lighting was dim. The wine was cheap and nobody cared. For the first three rounds they talked the way people always do when they have not seen each other in years -- catching up on marriages, kids, career titles that sounded more impressive than they felt. But somewhere in the middle of the meal, when the pretense of surface-level updates finally wore thin, someone asked a question that changed the whole evening. "What's actually been hard lately?" And they started telling the truth.

One of them had been laid off from a company he had worked at for eleven years. He was talented, well-regarded, and still had not found a new position four months later. Not because opportunities did not exist -- they did -- but because every morning he woke up and drove past the old office just to feel something familiar. Another had ended a long relationship and was paralyzed by a grief she could not name, stuck in rituals that no longer made sense, calling a number she had promised herself she would delete. A third had watched his entire industry shift beneath him and knew, clearly knew, that the skills that had earned him a promotion in 2015 were already becoming irrelevant -- but he had not updated a single one of them. The table went quiet in that particular way that happens when a group of people recognizes, all at once, that they have all been living the same story.
