That sounds like the kind of claim that gets eye-rolls from finance directors. Cameron knows this. He spends a fair chunk of the book defending himself against the charge that he has written a self-help paperback in academic clothing. He hasn't. His evidence comes from a meta-analysis of more than five hundred peer-reviewed studies, from twenty years of fieldwork inside hospitals, banks, telecoms, retailers, schools, and downsizing factories, and from network maps showing who in an organization is actually making the place breathe and who is quietly suffocating it. By the end of the book the geranium metaphor stops feeling soft and starts feeling like a balance-sheet item.
