Own the Day, Own Your Life
*by Aubrey Marcus (2018)*
A man walks barefoot in the Texas dawn
Aubrey Marcus is in Austin. The sun is just up. He has not touched his phone, has not opened his laptop, has not started a meeting. He is standing outside in his backyard, shoeless, drinking warm water with a pinch of sea salt and a quarter lemon squeezed into it. He calls this his morning mineral cocktail. After he finishes the glass, he turns his face into the sunlight for five minutes. Then he does twenty-three burpees. The number is meaningful only because he wore 23 on his back when he played basketball in high school, and the thought makes him happy. He breaks a small sweat. He goes inside, takes a hot shower, and at the end of it he turns the dial to full cold for three minutes while doing thirty deep belly breaths. By the time he sits down to write the book you are about to read, he has been awake for thirty minutes and his nervous system is wide open.
This is the scene Marcus uses to anchor everything in *Own the Day, Own Your Life*. He believes that most of the world is starting the day wrong. We sleep poorly, we wake up dehydrated, we reach for caffeine before water, we hide in artificial light, we sit down to a breakfast made of refined sugar, and then we wonder why by 2:30 in the afternoon we feel like a wrung-out dish towel. Marcus argues that the day itself is the unit of life that matters. Forget five-year plans for a second. If you cannot own one full day, in one body, in real time, you cannot own anything else. The book is a sixteen-chapter walk through what owning a single day looks like, hour by hour, from the first sip of water to the last breath before sleep.
