What is Hidden Potential about?
Talent is distributed equally. Opportunity isn't. Adam Grant reveals how to develop the character traits that take you further than raw ability alone. You'll learn why discomfort signals growth, how to absorb feedback like a sponge while filtering out the noise, and why embracing imperfection sets you free. Whether you're stuck, starting out, or uncertain of your potential, this book shows you that every setback is a plot point in an unfinished story.

Hidden Potential — Summary
In a Detroit hotel in the spring of 1991, eight kids from Harlem sat behind the chessboards. Their opponents came from an elite private school where even the kindergartners played chess, coached morning and afternoon by one of the best teachers in the country. The eight boys came from a different world: raised by single mothers, one of them having learned the game from a drug dealer in a park. On paper they had no chance. In the second-to-last round they actually slipped from third place to fifth. The team captain blundered, another boy lost his queen and ran out of the room in tears. Their coach walked out too, because he couldn't bear to watch. All he told them was this: control your decisions, not the outcome. In the final round they had to win all four of their remaining games, and they needed the top teams to stumble. That is exactly what happened. The Harlem kids finished in a tie for first. They became national champions, going from beginners to the top in two years.
What happened here? Exactly what Adam Grant's whole book is about. It isn't that these kids were secretly geniuses. It's that there was something in them that nobody saw until the right person, in the right way, finally reached it. Their coach, Maurice Ashley, put it like this: talent is distributed evenly, but opportunity is not. And he saw a chance where others just shrugged.
This book sets out to answer three big questions. How do we build the character traits in ourselves that carry us further than raw talent does? What temporary supports do we need to get over the obstacles? And how do we build systems that don't let hidden potential go to waste? If we walk through all three levels, by the end you'll look at yourself and at what you're capable of very differently.
