The Potato Gun That Changed One Life

In the spring of 2003, Russell Brunson was a broke sophomore wrestler at Boise State University. While most of his teammates blew their money in Las Vegas over spring break, Russell and his married friend Nathan Ploehn stayed home with nothing to do. So they did something strange. They built potato guns out of PVC pipe.

It started as a goof, but Russell noticed something. To build a decent potato gun, he and Nathan had to dig through forums, test different pipe sizes, and figure out the right ratios. Within about a week, they knew more about potato guns than ninety-five percent of the people on earth. That gap, that tiny sliver of specialized knowledge, was the whole opportunity. They filmed a how-to video, sneaking a camera into Home Depot to grab footage of the parts (they got kicked out once and snuck back in "stealth mode"), burned it onto a DVD, and started selling it online. It made twenty or thirty dollars a day.

That trickle of money doesn't sound like much. But Russell says it "completely transformed my life," because it taught him the single idea that the rest of *Expert Secrets* unpacks: you don't need a degree, a title, or permission to become an expert. You just need to learn a little more than the people you want to serve, and then package what you know so it helps them.
